Put me in Summer and I’ll be a … Happy Snowman!
Do you know what makes a pediatrician happy? When kids are healthy, growing and developing, having fun, and staying safe! Summer is one of the best times for kids to get outside, exercise, socialize, learn independence and build lifelong memories. And while you and your family enjoy the sun and outdoors, here are some summer tips that I use at home with my own kids and recommend to my patients, many of which apply throughout the year.

Sunscreen
Balancing outdoor fun and protecting against sunburn are important summer considerations. The best options are shade and clothing. This includes long-sleeve UV swimwear and hats. And don’t forget sunglasses!
In addition to clothing and shade, sunscreen is extremely important. For infants and kids, Mineral and/or Zinc Oxide-based sunscreens are typically preferred. Here are some of my favorite sunscreen brands that I use for myself and my kids (click on each image for more information)
Bug Spray
I completed Med School at the American University of the Caribbean, which meant I spent my first 2 years of basic sciences on the island of St. Maarten. My daughter was 3 months old when I started, so I know a thing or two about bug spray for kids! Mosquitoes on the island were insufferable. They were everywhere, almost impossible to avoid, and even carried diseases such as Dengue and Chikungunya. Although DEET-based bug spray is the top recommended insect repellant, I have found this to be very irritating. Personally, I have found that OFF! Clean Feel Picaridin-based repellant works just as well and feels so much better than DEET. If you live or will be traveling to more high-risk mosquito areas, you may want to still consider DEET-based repellant.
Hydration
Infants
Breast milk or formula is best for infant hydration. DO NOT give water. If they cannot take milk, use Pedialyte or a 1/2 Apple Juice – 1/2 Water Mix. If very hot or humid, you may need to give milk more frequently.
Electrolytes
For older kids, teenagers, and adults, water is usually sufficient. If you are outside for a long period of time, in high humidity, sweat a lot, or doing intense physical activities, then adding electrolytes can be helpful. You can even try 1/2 apple juice and 1/2 water! If you’re looking for good electrolyte brands, here’s what I use:
Transparent Labs Hydrate Electrolyte Formula
High quality and similarly priced cost per ounce compared to other options
Venture Pal Electrolyte Mix
Balanced electrolyte mix with multiple flavor options. Inexpensive cost per oz compared to most other options
Water Bottles
Water Safety
One of the most fun and exciting summer activities can also be one of the most dangerous for little kids, especially curious toddles and babies. Take proper safety precautions and enjoy water activities and swimming worry free!
