
Dr. Maxwell’s quick Constipation Reference Guide for treating both occasional hard stools and chronic constipation that requires a bowel cleanout. General Principles
- Hydration
- Drink plenty of water
- Limit juice and milk
- Increase Fiber
- Fruits, vegetables, whole grains
- Chia seeds, flax seeds
- Prunes/prune puree
- Psyllium husk powder

Be sure to talk with your pediatrician BEFORE using these for your infant. One of the key ingredients is PRUNES!
Soften and Stimulate
Your doctor may recommend some of the following treatments to help soften the stool, or provide fast stimulation for a bowel movement
Probably the most common stool softener available. This softens stool by pulling extra water into the intestines and softening the stool. You may need to mix for up to 1-2 minutes so it completely dissolves. DO NOT dissolve in milk. Verify proper dosing with your medical provider.
Only to be used occasionally. Frequent use can reduce the natural reflex to stool.

Constipation Cleanout
Also known as a bowel cleanout. This should only be done when discussed with your medical provider to ensure proper diagnosis and dosing. Different doctors may use different regimens, but they almost all include a stool softener (Miralax) and stimulant medication (Senna).

Must be given at NIGHT. Be sure to get the correct dose from your doctor before taking. The liquid syrup for kids (8.6mg/5mL) can be either a prescription from your child’s doctor, or found over the counter. Be sure to obtain the appropriate dose from your doctor BEFORE using.
