What is normal?

Many kids can start potty training between 2-3 years old.
Some might not be ready until after 3.
Daytime potty training tends to be easier than nighttime.
Being fully potty trained might not happen until around 4-5 years old.

What should I expect?

  1. Watch for the signs that your child is ready. Here are some examples:
    • Communication skills and understanding
    • Motor skills to go to the bathroom
    • Telling you when they have a wet or dirty diaper
    • Moving to a different location to poop or pee in their diaper
    • Curiosity about the bathroom or asking to go potty
  2. Guide and Teach your child with patience
  3. Expect Accidents to happen, and NEVER punish accidents
  4. Expect good days and hard days
  5. Expect regressions and setbacks
  6. What worked for one child might not work for your child

Bedwetting and Night Terrors

Bedwetting is very common during potty training and may take longer to master, sometimes even years after daytime potty training.

Bedwetting and Sleep

Night Terrors (Sleep Terrors) are often described as a child that is screaming, crying, inconsolable, and can’t wake up. They can last anywhere from 10-30 minutes or more, and the child does not remember the incident the next day. Although it can appear scary to parents, it is actually quite common and most children grow out of them.
In relation to potty training, sometimes a night terror occurs when a child has to go to the bathroom at night, but doesn’t know that they need to. It’s like a signal from their bladder to their brain to WAKE UP! but they don’t know how yet. One thing you can try is to take your child into the bathroom and sit them on the toilet. If they immediately pee, then go back to sleep, you have your answer!
