What is Autism?

First let me tell you what Autism is NOT.
Autism is NOT caused by vaccines
Autism is NOT caused by Acetaminophen/Tylenol
Autism is NOT a “problem” that needs to be cured

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder, is part of a complex Neurodivergent Spectrum that can affect a person’s ability to socialize, communicate, and/or self-regulate. This can lead to delayed learning and development, sensory issues, and/or challenges at school, work, and relationships. Autism is typically diagnosed in childhood, but may not be diagnosed until later due to masking or hiding symptoms to “fit in” and appear normal to those around them. Autism exists across a spectrum. There is a wide range of variability in severity and level of support needed from person to person, and can change throughout an individual’s lifetime.

What is most important is recognizing some of the signs as early as possible, understanding how their neurodivergent brain functions and thinks, and discussing with a physician or mental health expert to properly diagnose and provide the proper support and resources.

Here are some common signs of autism:

EARLY INTERVENTION (Developmental Delays)

In addition to autism-specific therapy (ABA), your child may also benefit from other developmental supports and resources. Talk with your pediatrician to see if your child needs any additional supports. Contact your local Early Intervention program to have your child evaluated and see what resources may be available to you. Most Early Intervention programs are free and run by the state and/or local governments.
For children ages 3 and over, contact your local school department.
